Durham Economic Assessment (2009-10)
ICF GHK worked closely with Durham County Council to develop their Economic Assessment . This Assessment now provides a common understanding of the County’s economy, through a single evidence base, bringing together multiple strategies into a coherent framework for intervention. Our research increased understanding of the County’s economic geography. It identified and mapped linkages between the County's town centres and other centres; flows of people, goods, information and public services; the distribution of sectors and clusters; supply chains linkages; distinctive market areas; and the economic roles of the County's town centres.
The new economic geography we defined offered an overview of where the economy of the County stands and what the Council and partners need to do to make it a better place to live, work and invest. Our report included spatial, social and economic priorities. We also started a dialogue about the role of some of the major residential centres across the County, highlighting ‘areas of opportunity’ and specific proposals to help ensure that existing and proposed forms of development and growth are soundly focused on the hidden economic potential of County Durham.
