Gender Equality and Non-Discrimination

Gender equality and non-discrimination are fundamental principles of the European Union. The EU seeks to promote equality and eliminate discrimination on the grounds of sex, race or ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age and sexual orientation by legislative and non-legislative measures. Taking a dual approach, the EC mainstreams human rights and gender equality in Community actions and introduces specific activities to promote equality in all social policy areas. Despite relative improvements, inequalities persist in employment, decision-making and education and can primarily affect members of vulnerable groups such as ethnic and religious minorities.

GHK conducts policy research, evaluation and impact assessment and provides technical support services on gender equality and human rights in Europe and beyond. Our research and analysis helps policy-makers understand the extent of discrimination, the effectiveness of different approaches, the need (if any) to address structural inequalities and eliminate discrimination against members of vulnerable groups. Working with clients at international, European, national and local levels, GHK provides analytical and strategic support, and helps clients interpret evidence and improve the outcomes and impact of their work. GHK has undertaken a large number of assignments assessing existing and prospective interventions including the following:

• Discrimination on grounds of sex, religion and belief, age, disability and sexual orientation;

• Gender budgeting;

• Gender pay gap;

• Women and entrepreneurship;

• Reconciliation of work and family life;

• Gender equality in education;

• Gender and human rights;

• Gender-based violence;

• Multiple discrimination.
